Thinking about gray blending but not quite sure what you’re signing up for?
You’re not alone.
One of the biggest questions we hear from guests considering gray blending is simply:
“What actually happens at the appointment?”
The answer depends a lot on your starting color, how much natural gray you have, and where you eventually want your hair to go.
Still deciding between gray blending and traditional gray coverage? Read our guide to Gray Blending vs. Gray Coverage to compare the two.
Here’s what you can expect.
What Happens Before My Gray Blending Appointment?
Before your appointment, you’ll receive an online consultation form by email.
This gives our stylists a chance to learn more about your current color, gray pattern, hair history, maintenance preferences, and what you’re hoping to achieve before you even sit in the chair.
Photos are especially helpful, so don’t be afraid to send inspiration!
Of course, we’ll still talk everything through when you arrive. Hair color is personal, and sometimes seeing your hair in person gives us even more information.
Should I Bring Inspiration Photos?
Absolutely.
Photos are one of the easiest ways to show us what you’re picturing.
But here’s the important part: inspiration photos are a starting point, not necessarily an exact roadmap.
Someone with naturally light hair and 70% gray may need a completely different approach than someone with dark permanent color and 20% gray.
We’ll use the photos to understand the look you love and then customize the plan for your hair.
What Will My Gray Blending Appointment Actually Do?
Gray blending is designed to soften the contrast between your natural gray and the rest of your hair.
Depending on your gray pattern and your desired result, we may use highlights, lowlights, demi-permanent color, toners or a combination of techniques.
The goal is not to remove years of previous color and take your entire head back to its natural silver.
That is a gray transformation, which is a completely different service.
Gray blending is for someone who wants to work with the gray they currently have, soften their grow-out and create a more dimensional, lower-maintenance result.
Will Gray Blending Make Me Completely Gray?
No, and that isn’t the purpose of the service.
Gray blending allows some of your natural gray to become part of your overall color while keeping dimension throughout the hair.
You may still have brunette, blonde or other tones throughout your hair depending on your natural color and the look you want.
If your goal is to remove previous artificial color and transition your entire head back to your natural silver, you would want to explore our Gray Transformation service instead.
How Long Does a Gray Blending Appointment Take?
Appointment length varies depending on your hair length, density, gray pattern and the techniques we need to create your result.
Some gray blending appointments may involve highlights, lowlights, demi-permanent color, toning or a combination of services.
That’s another reason the online consultation is so helpful. It gives us a chance to review your hair ahead of time and make sure the appropriate amount of time is reserved for your appointment.
Will I Still Have to Color My Hair?
Possibly.
Gray blending is usually lower maintenance, not necessarily no maintenance.
You may still want occasional highlights, lowlights, toners, glosses or demi-permanent color to keep everything balanced.
The big difference is that the grow-out is typically softer and less obvious than traditional permanent gray coverage.
What Should I Expect After My First Appointment?
One of the biggest benefits of gray blending is usually a softer grow-out.
As your natural gray grows in, we can adjust your color at future appointments based on how your hair is growing and what you’re liking.
That might mean refreshing highlights or lowlights, adjusting your toner, adding demi-permanent color or simply maintaining the blend we created.
Your gray blending plan can change with you. You don’t have to commit to becoming more gray over time unless that’s actually your goal.
What If My Goal Is Eventually to Go Back to My Natural Gray?
If your ultimate goal is to completely transition away from previously colored hair and return to your natural gray pattern, gray blending may not be the service you’re looking for.
That falls under our Gray Transformation service.
Gray transformations are much more involved and are customized based on your existing color, natural gray pattern and hair history.
If you aren’t sure which service fits your goal, your online consultation helps us point you in the right direction before your appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I’m a good candidate for gray blending?
If you’re tired of a strong regrowth line, want to see more of your natural gray, or are looking for a softer maintenance schedule, it may be worth exploring.
Can gray blending work on dark hair?
Yes. Gray blending can work beautifully on darker hair, but the amount of contrast between your natural color and your gray will affect the techniques we use.
Your previous color history also matters. If achieving your goal would require removing a significant amount of existing artificial color, we may recommend a different service.
Does gray blending damage the hair?
Any chemical service needs to be planned carefully. We adjust the techniques and products we use based on your hair’s condition and history.
How often will I need appointments?
There isn’t one schedule for everyone. Some guests come in regularly for subtle maintenance, while others can stretch their appointments much farther apart than they did with traditional gray coverage.
